Bangladesh Train Seat Classes Explained: Shuvon, Snigdha, AC Chair, and Sleeper

Everything you need to know about Bangladesh Railway seat classes — Shuvon, Shuvon Chair, Snigdha (AC), AC_S, and AC_B sleeper.

Understanding Bangladesh Railway Seat Classes

When you book a Bangladesh Railway ticket, the seat class you choose determines your comfort, your cost, and in some cases whether you can actually find a seat at all. Bangladesh Railway currently operates five main passenger classes.

Shuvon (শুভন) — Economy Reserved

Shuvon is the most widely available reserved class. Padded benches arranged in rows facing forward, similar to a bus. You get an assigned seat number, which means you are guaranteed a place to sit. No air conditioning — ceiling fans and open windows. Often crowded and warm in summer. Lowest reserved class fare. Available on all intercity and most mail trains.

Shuvon Chair (শুভন চেয়ার) — Economy Chair

An upgrade from standard Shuvon with individual forward-facing seats instead of bench seating. Slightly wider and more padded. No AC, but the individual seat layout feels less crowded. Fare is about 20-30% more than Shuvon.

Snigdha (স্নিগ্ধা) — AC Chair Car

Snigdha is the most popular premium class on Bangladesh Railway. Air-conditioned chair cars with individual reclining seats, clean toilets nearby, and a noticeably quieter environment. Fare roughly 2.5–3x Shuvon price. Best for: Most long-distance journeys. If in doubt, book this.

AC_S (First Class AC Seat)

The step above Snigdha. Wider seats, fewer total passengers per car, and a notch more private. On some trains, AC_S includes a meal service. Fare roughly 4–5x Shuvon.

AC_B (First Class AC Berth / Sleeper)

The highest class on Bangladesh Railway, available only on overnight trains. Each berth is a fold-down bed with a curtain for privacy. Upper and lower berths available. Bedding provided on most trains. Fares are the highest of any class.

Unreserved (General)

No assigned seating. You pay a flat platform ticket and sit or stand wherever you can find space. Very cheap, often very crowded. Fine for short journeys (under 1 hour) but not recommended for longer trips.

Which Class Should You Book?
