Bangladesh Railway Rapid Pass Smart Card 2026: Complete Guide

Complete guide to Bangladesh Railway Rapid Pass smart card. Covers where to buy, how to recharge, benefits, and expansion plans.

What Is Rapid Pass?

Rapid Pass is Bangladesh's smart card automated fare collection system based on NFC (Near-Field Communication) technology. It allows passengers to use a single card across multiple public transport modes in Dhaka and surrounding areas, including:

  • Bangladesh Railway — train services across the country
  • Dhaka Metro Rail (MRT) — all lines
  • BRTC buses — Bus Route Rationalization (BRR) and BRT systems
  • BIWTA launches — ferry services
  • MRT Pass integration — 10% discount on metro fares

As of 2024, Rapid Pass had over 66,000 active users, and the government aims to expand this significantly in 2026.

Where to Buy Rapid Pass

You can purchase a Rapid Pass card at:

  • Metro stations: All MRT Line 6 stations (Uttara to Motijheel) since December 2024
  • Bangladesh Railway stations: Kamalapur, Chittagong, and major junctions
  • BRTC bus counters: House Building, Uttara (Notun Bazaar), Gulshan-2, Shooting Club, Dhaka Chaka Banani, Police Plaza
  • DBBL branches: Official banking partner

Card price: Tk 400 (includes Tk 200 pre-loaded on the card)

How to Recharge Rapid Pass

You can recharge your Rapid Pass through multiple channels:

  • Mobile Financial Services (MFS): bKash, Nagad, Rocket (coming soon — software in development)
  • DBBL banking partner: Online recharge through DBBL app
  • Metro station counters: Cash or card payment
  • Station vending machines: Available at major railway stations

Note: The government is developing an online recharge system via MFS that is expected to be operational within 1-1.5 years.

Benefits of Using Rapid Pass

  • 10% discount on Dhaka Metro Rail fares
  • Single card for all public transport modes
  • No need for cash — tap and go
  • Reduced queue times at ticket counters
  • Automatic fare calculation — system calculates best fare

Rapid Pass Expansion Plans (2026)

The government has ambitious plans to expand Rapid Pass in 2026:

  • June 2026: Integrated software for multi-modal transport expected to be operational
  • Bus validators: Installation on BRTC BRR and BRT buses
  • 11.5 lakh cards: DTCA plans to distribute 1.15 million cards initially
  • Clearing house: Central system for fare disbursement between operators
  • Online recharge: MFS-based recharge system in development

The "Public Transport Integrated Ticketing System and Clearing House Management Act, 2024" was passed to make Rapid Pass a universal payment card for all transport modes.

Rapid Pass vs Regular Ticket

Feature Rapid Pass Regular Ticket
Metro Rail discount 10% off Full fare
Multi-modal use Yes (train, bus, ferry, metro) Single mode only
Cash required No (tap card) Yes
Queue time Minimal Longer
Initial cost Tk 400 (Tk 200 pre-loaded) Free (per ticket)

Is Rapid Pass Worth It?

If you commute regularly in Dhaka using metro, buses, or trains, yes — the 10% metro discount and convenience of a single card make it worthwhile. For occasional travelers, the Tk 400 initial cost may not justify the benefits unless you use multiple transport modes.

The real value will come in mid-2026 when the integrated software launches and you can use Rapid Pass seamlessly across all buses, trains, ferries, and metro lines with a single tap.
